Meteor science is concerned with very small particles in the Solar System. The investigation of meteoroids, their origin and their orbital dynamics tells a lot about the nextlarger classes of objects - asteroids and comets. Typical types of studies are ground-based meteor surveys from single stations delivering the spatial flux density of particles, multiple-station imaging providing meteoroid orbits in space, and fireball detection with meteorite finds providing information about the bulk material of asteroids. The knowledge of the small-particle distribution versus size and velocity is a substantial information for designing space missions in the near-Earth environment. All these investigations require the recording of the actually visible phenomenon, the meteor. The conclusions drawn from the observations are in most cases of statistical nature. Large quantities of individual meteor observations are therefore necessary to arrive at meaningful conclusions. The advent of Virtual Observatories in space science is ideally timed with the observational advances in data recording in meteor science, and the International Meteor Organization (IMO) aims to participate in this advent.
