We present the velocity function (VF) for a random sample of ˜400 galaxies selected from the 2MASS galaxy catalog with near-infrared apparent magnitudes 10.50 ≤ Ks ≤ 11.25 mag. We obtained long-slit absorption-line (covering Hδ through NaD) and emission-line (centered on Hα ) spectra along the major-axes of the target galaxies. We measure the rotation curves and velocity dispersions from the spectra for late- and early-type galaxies, respectively. We combine the kinematic properties with inclination angles derived from our near-infrared surface photometry to measure the VF. We compare our results to previous VF estimates that were derived from luminosity functions and kinematic relations constructed from inhomogeneous galaxy samples.
