An investigation was conducted to determine, at a dip angle of 60 deg, whether valley depth and valley width could both be obtained from practical ionograms. Three model valleys were constructed from overlapping Chapman layers and a special valley term was incorporated into a least-squares polynomial analysis method. It was shown that if the correct depth was assumed, the polynomial was capable of fitting the virtual heights to an accuracy greater than would be obtainable from a practical ionogram. Model studies are used to show that iteration of valley depth to achieve best fit to the virtual height data is not practicable given the inaccuracies in typical ionograms. Estimates of the integrated ionization within the valley region are possible, and such estimates were made for 130 selected ionograms.
