New spectrograms and photometry of the binary central star of the planetary nebula NGC 2346 have confirmed the variations reported by Kohoutek (1982). It is shown that these variations did not exist before 1981, and the analysis of the new data demonstrates that it is possible to ascribe this drastic change to the passage of a dust cloud in front of the binary system. A tentative model is proposed, and an extrapolation indicates that the eclipse of the binary system must have started in May or June 1981 and must finish in March or April 1983.
