In 2001 the European Space Agency (ESA) began studies for a mission that would land a rover on the surface of Mars as part of its planetary exploration programme Aurora. This rover was to carry a sophisticated automatic laboratory capable of detecting and analysing traces of life, both present and past. These studies are now close to realization and ``ExoMars'' will be presented for approval to the ESA Ministerial Council in November 2008. This unique mission has the potential for major scientific, technological and societal benefits for its contributing nations. The UK has a major role in this exciting interplanetary adventure.
