While the William Herschel Telescope due for installation at La Palma in 1985 is conventional in many respects, it incorporates a number of novel features made possible by its altazimuth mounting. The prime focus unit and the Cassegrain mirror cell will be attached to the same mounting face at the center of the spider vanes. Structural deformations of the mounting do not result in a pointing error greater than 10 arcsec, which after computer-derived corrections will yield an ultimate pointing error of less than 2 arcsec. Overall telescope weight is 190 tonnes, by contrast to 360 tonnes for an equatorial-mount telescope of comparable aperture.
