The thermodynamic equilibrium of a self-gravitating plasma with scalar interaction is studied in terms of general relativistic kinetic theory. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the equilibrium are determined which significantly correlate the symmetry of the intrinsic gravitational field with that of a macroscopic scalar field and the macroscopic motions of the plasma according to Einstein's equations.
