An analytic solution is obtained for the force-free magnetic field equation. A formula for the extractable free magnetic energy is derived which can be used to forecast the occurrence of solar flares. The results are applied to the active region AR 12904 of October 1972, in which a large nearly circular unipolar sunspot appeared with twisted penumbra filaments.
