We generate a model of the double compact objects in the Milky Way: binaries consisting of white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes. Over 99 percent of these systems radiate gravitational waves that may be detectable by gravitational wave observatories such as LIGO, VIRGO, and LISA. We use an updated population synthesis method to evolve stars in our Galaxy as a function of metallicity; this technique includes detailed mass transfer phases, common envelope events, magnetic braking, as well as gravitational radiation. We couple these results with the Galactic star formation history to calculate the present population of double compact objects. These results are folded with the Galactic structure and dynamical evolution of stars, which allows us to construct the populations formed in the disk, bulge and halo.
The main goal of our project is to provide the gravitational wave community with realistic properties of double compact objects that can be used in various applications. For example different gravitational wave data analysis schemes may be tested against our model as a mock data challenge. Additionally, this is a pilot study that will allow us to identify which properties are most relevant to the gravitational wave community, which will allow us to generate a public database of our galactic model. In the future, we will extend the database for models of other galaxies, varying metallicity, star formation histories and a galaxy mass and type.
