Polarization, Techniques: Polarimetric, Sun: Activity, Sunspots

Following a discussion on various possible mechanisms that might give rise to polarization for the global light from the solar disk, experiments are described which have been undertaken to make detections in broad spectral bands and across spectral features that are sensitive to Zeeman effects. It is claimed that when the solar disk exhibits a high degree of activity, polarization can be detected at the levels between p~0.00001 and 0.0001 and that the effects of solar rotation can also be seen. The results of the exercise show how difficult it would be to make observational solar-stellar connections by polarimetry, other than for stars with extreme magnetic activity.
