From fifteen 24 h records of v-parallel, measured by EISCAT, tidal motions of the neutral atmosphere have been deduced. The maximal amplitude of this motion was studied as a function of altitude for different times and seasons. The signatures of gravity waves have also clearly been identified in the same v-parallel records. Some parameters of the waves can be deduced. Finally, average power spectra of gravity waves in the frequency range 15 min to about 6 h have been computed. These power spectra show a distinctly different shape in summer and winter, indicating that long period gravity waves occur more frequently in summer. Possible explanations of this result are discussed.
