Ground-based data on the quasi-periodic modulation of VLF hiss are examined. It is shown that the experimental period-depth and period-amplitude relationships of the modulation differ depending on the magnitude of the period. In addition, it is found that the observed quasi-periodic modulation can be explained by theories that describe the occurrence of periodic oscillation regimes in the magnetosphere. This makes it possible to use ground-based VLF techniques for the diagnostics of the ionospheric and magnetospheric plasmas.
