Computations of spatial derivatives derived from in-situ observations of the electron plasma measured by the PEACE experiment on the four Cluster spacecraft are used to investigate both compression and vorticity in the solar wind. One finding is that the strahl plays a prominent role in the creation of vorticity in the upstream. Coupled as it is to the magnetic field, changes in the field orientation result in deflections in the overall solar wind velocity. These create local velocity shears which result in an observable vorticity. We will look at the possibility that the coupling of the magnetic field to the solar wind through the strahl can in fact be used to couple magnetic turbulence to the local electron plasma in the upstream.
