An electron microprobe study of the stoichiometry of sulfides (pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite) indicates local heterogeneities. The concentration of major elements varies with the degree of metamorphism. The evolution is rapid for pyrite and chalcopyrite, slow for sphalerite. The elemental distributions can be indicative of the degree of metamorphism. Associated isotopic analyses give indications as to the evolutionary mechanisms, solid state diffusion or recrystallization.
Iron content of sphalerites is indicative of the nature of the magmatic rocks related to the sulfide deposits. For example sulfides from Cyprus show characteristics that are similar to those displayed by oceanic sphalerites.
