The author discusses the use of proper motions in deriving the stellar luminosity function. Proper motions have been used extensively by Van Rhijn and by Luyten in their work on the stellar luminosity function. The author discusses their derivations briefly and then outlines a new determination of the faint end of the luminosity function from a proper-motion selected sample of stars with parallaxes.
