The magnitude of spurious calculated real height oscillations, caused by the virtual height trace cusps commonly contained by ionograms when second or higher order analyses are employed, are studied by means of basic discontinuities and model ionograms. Model calculations are shown to yield the highest accuracy and smallest oscillations in the case of a continuous analysis in which the cusp frequency is not scaled. An overlapping-cubic analysis is described which eliminates spurious oscillations, yielding the smallest cusp region errors and an accuracy comparable to that of parabolic laminations at other points.
