During a 5 yr period R. Evans has carried out a visual search for supernovae in 1017 bright galaxies. The subsample comprising 748 Shapley-Ames galaxies surveyed by him constitutes a homogeneous data base that is suitable for a determination of the supernova rate. For the supernova rates recently derived by Tammann one would have expected 54 supernovae to have been observed in the sample. In fact, Evans found only 11. The authors conclude from their observations that Tammann's supernova rates are probably too high by a factor of ≡3. They also find that the majority of Galactic supernova remnants must have been produced by massive progenitors.
