The Systeme Probatoire d'Observation de la Terre (SPOT), a general purpose remote sensing satellite system, is progressing toward an early 1984 launch within the French National Space Program, in association between France, Sweden, and Belgium. The background, mission objectives, and some technical characteristics of the system are described. Each of two identical telescopes has a capability for targeting the line of sight to either side of the satellite track, and for operating on a ground sampling step of 20 m (with three color bands) or 10 m (broad band). This flexibility, enhanced by an adequate choice of orbit, will enable more frequent sampling of specific target scenes, and provide for stereo coverage of important areas. Linear arrays of CCD detectors are expected to combine a high data rate (25 megabits/second/data channel) with good radiometric resolution. Data from the satellite will be accessible, either through the central facility in Toulouse (France) or through foreign authorized X-band direct read-out stations.
