Abstract

A hydrodynamic model of an oblique rotator is constructed. The rotator here is a rotating self-gravitating drop of a homogeneous fluid with an internal magnetic field that forms an angle with the axis of rotation. Calculations are made of the spectrum and polarization of the system's gravitational radiation. It is shown that there are first and second harmonics of the frequency of rotation in the spectrum, with the first harmonic due entirely to Newtonian stresses. The first harmonic is not attended by precession of the pulsar's magnetic axis. A calculation is also made of the response of a heterodyne detector to the gravitational radiation described here. It is shown that use of the radiation's polarization properties makes it possible to increase the sensitivity of the receiver.
