The regular magnetic features of the solar cycle are discussed, and some irregularities are noted. The generation of solar magnetic fields may be by the dynamo process or by another hypothetical mechanism of the solar magnetic cycle, such as the primordial magnetic field model. The strengths and weaknesses of both are discussed. Radioactive dating is used to record prehistoric solar activity, and solar oscillations via pressure and gravity waves give clues to the interior structure and dynamics that in turn affect the solar cycle. The study of minute solar pulsations may be useful in the investigation of internal mixing and stratification within the sun. Understanding the relationship between magnetic fields and velocity fields on the sun's surface will be of value for understanding the origin of the solar cycle.
