Recent modifications of generally accepted concepts of the magnetosphere are described, and unresolved problems related to the role of magnetization, electric currents and fields in cosmic plasmas, the frozen field condition, particle acceleration, and the structure of matter in space are discussed. The contribution of in situ measurements to the revised viewpoint is examined, and the importance of laboratory experiments in cosmic plasma physics is emphasized. Divergences between theoretical and actual behaviors of plasmas are noted.
