We present here the results of the first search for submillisecond variability in gamma-ray bursts. We have examined 20 of the brightest BATSE bursts for isolated flares and for low amplitude fluctuations. We find that GRB970229 has a flare with a rise time of 200+/-30 μs and fall time of 300+/-50 μs. In addition we find all bursts to show activity on time scales of less than 30 ms. Typical bursts show activity on the time scale of a millisecond, while 30% of the burst show sub-millisecond activity. This result can be used to prove that the emission regions are patchy and that any spherical symmetry in the shell must be broken.
