After the 1986 flight past Halley's nucleus at a distance of 600 km, the Giotto spacecraft is being prepared for the Giotto Extended Mission, the encounter with the Comet Grigg-Skjellerup, which Giotto is expected to pass at a distance of not greater than 1000 km. This paper describes the history of the Giotto project and the events of its dramatic meeting with the Comet Halley. Special attention is given to the Giotto's origin, the details of its launch, the spacecraft design, and the results of the Comet Halley observations carried out during the March 13 - March 14, 1986 encounter.
