Integral transformation techniques and the FN method are used to develop, for the case of a finite plane-parallel layer, general results for the mean intensity and the net flux relevant to the classic searchlight problem in radiative transfer. The special case of a normally incident beam is then considered, and the resulting expressions for the mean intensity and the net flux are reduced to one-dimensional inversion integrals that are evaluated numerically to yield accurate numerical results for several test cases.
