Radiative transition probabilities and effective collision strengths for electron impact excitation of the intercombination multiplet 3s(2)3p(2) (3)P-3s3p(3) 5S(0) of S III at 1720 A are presented. It is found that resonances are important in the calculation of the collision strength. Their positions and sizes are sensitive to the description of the target ion; hence the results for the effective collision strengths for low values of electron temperature are not definitive. Effective collision strengths are also given for other low-lying intercombination transitions.
