The role of upstream waves in the process of supercritical quasi-parallel shock re-formation is investigated by performing a number of 1D hybrid simulations of collisionless shocks and of the interaction of two plasma streams. It is shown that, while the upstream waves are not a necessary prerequisite for shock re-formation, the simultaneous occurrence of upstream waves and reflected cold ions leads to shock re-formation due to the kinematics of the reflected ions in the wave crest and the subsequent feedback loop.
