Baker et al. (1982) have developed a model which is based on the linear ion tearing mode theory of Schindler (1974). Attention was given to observations which suggested that the observed amount of O(+) ions in the outer magnetosphere generally increases substantially with increasing magnetospheric activity. It was proposed that in connection with the increased loading of heavy ionosheric ions after the first substorm, subsequent substorms in the series might develop at locations closer to the earth. The present investigation is concerned with the evaluation of the possible role of ionospheric ions in substorm developments, taking into account one specific, well-documented interval in which plasma sheet composition measurements were available and in which substorm localization could be determined. It was found that the first (1055 UT) substorm dramatically altered the ionic composition of the near-earth plasma sheet. The second (1436 UT) substorm occurred very far westward of the first. It was centered nearer to the earth in the tail than the first.
