A numerical solution is presented for a two-dimensional system of transport equations for an ionospheric plasma consisting of five kinds of ions. Attention is then given to the effect of latitudinally inhomogeneous meridional electric fields in the formation of the main ionospheric trough; the effect of the zonal electric field on the spatial distribution of charged particles; and the role of horizontal plasma transport on the formation of the spatial structure of the high-latitude ionosphere.
