The effect of inhomogeneous horizontal transport of ionospheric plasma, associated with magnetospheric-convection electric fields, on the formation of the main trough and the plasmapause is investigated; the relationship between the trough and the plasmapause in the case of closed geomagnetic-field geometry is also considered. The analysis is based on a model for calculating the space-time variations of ionospheric parameters by numerical integration of the continuity equations of O2(+), NO(+), O(+), and H(+) ions along the lines of force.
