Observations are presented of the first major active regions and large-scale magnetic field patterns of cycle 22, showing that the emergence of a transequatorial pattern, or cell, of positive flux related to the old-cycle activity is followed by the first new cycle active regions of the longitude range emerging across a neutral line of this cell, which continue to grow and expand across the equator for several rotations. Active regions of both the old and the new cycles emerged across the neutral lines of the cell, in one case across the same transequatorial neutral line during one rotation, suggesting that the formation of transequatorial cell such as these might be a significant step in the transition from cycle 21 to cycle 22. The observed evolution of the new active regions is compared with their theoretical evolution using simulations based on the flux transport equation.
