Geomagnetic-variation data are analyzed in order to examine the relationship between the auroral electrojet and the appearance of two types of radio auroras - diffuse and radio auroras and short-duration radio auroras occurring during the burst phase of substorms. It is shown that diffuse radio auroras generally appear in those regions of the eastern electroject in which the rotation of the vectors of equivalent ionospheric current density commences. Short-duration discrete radio auroras appear on the southern boundary of the region where the eastern electrojet is abruptly intensified; the current density in the regions occupied by these auroras does not increase and can even decrease.
