Current theoretical methods for producing relevant atomic data are considered, and the factors which determine the quality of radiation and collisional atomic data are outlined. Particular attention is given to the selection of an ionization rate for accurate ionization-balance calculations. The ionization balance curves give the relative abundances of the different stages of ionization of each element as a function of temperature and density. Current studies show that ionization-balance calculations based on a semi-empirical formula are better than those based on the ECIP method.
