A detailed examination is devoted to data on low-energy solar particle injection into the earth's upper atmosphere in relation to the dynamics of the equatorial ring current; the Dst index is taken as a measure of ring current intensity. Particular attention is given to the dependence of magnetic storm amplitude on chromospheric-flare importance. It is shown that storm-time variations of ring current intensity are related to changes in the solar proton flux in interplanetary space.
