It is shown that the electron concentration at heights above the peak of the F2-layer increases by a factor of between 2 and 5 during periods of enhanced 10·7 cm solar flux. The effect is more pronounced at a latitude where the magnetic dip is 30° than above the magnetic equator. There is no obvious accompanying effect in the critical frequency of the F2-layer, and the combined evidence suggests that the entire topside electron distribution is displaced upwards during periods of enhanced solar flux.
