On the basis of the close relation between ascending prominences and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) as well as our understanding of the properties of the prominence dynamics, we study the dynamic evolutionary properties of the helmet coronal loop above an ascending prominence under the interaction of the background magnetic field, and analyze the intrinsic relation between the eruptive prominence and the CME on August 18, 1980. The slowly ascending prominence is found to lead to a gradual change of the helmet coronal streamer. The acceleration and ultimate velocity of the ascending prominence determine the degree of violence of the CME event. The energy of the CME may come from the released magnetic energy of the eruptive prominence. Our theoretical analysis is basically consistent with observational data.
