An analytical solution of the nonstationary equation of continuity with a time-dependent right part is used to investigate the reaction of the ionosphere to electric fields of nighttime baylike disturbances. Variations of NmF2 and hmF2 are assessed as a function of the time of development of the disturbance and the level of solar activity. A comparison with theoretical and experimental results shows that the analytical solution correctly identifies the electric fields of the baylike disturbances as the chief factor leading to restructuring of the ionosphere during nighttime substorms. This solution also makes it possible to take into account disturbances of the ionosphere due to other factors, which can be useful in the analysis of the complex mechanisms of the transmission of disturbances to the ionosphere and upper atmosphere.
