Direct imaging has begun to detect giant planets orbiting at large distances from their host stars. A new generation of instruments are poised to expand direct imaging surveys to more stars, older planets, and smaller orbital separations. Such observations will provide opportunities to test planet formation models. After reviewing the predictions of various formation models, I will discuss the potential for an age-dependent population of planets on wide orbits and implications for interpretation of direct imaging surveys.
