In order to explain the scatter of spectral parameters of the atmospherics observed by VLF atmospheric analyzers, two hypotheses are discussed. The first suggests that the scattering results from the interference between the atmospherics of closely subsequent strokes of the source region. The second suggests that the scattering is caused by random variations of the time-dependent return stroke currents. The second hypothesis is evaluated for a model composed of three components, each expressed by a double exponential pulse function. Two time-delay constants separate the components in time. It is found that a complete description of the return-stroke current model requires eleven parameters which randomly vary under certain conditions. This causes variations of 'group delaytime difference' and 'spectral amplitude ratio' values in the radiated electromagnetic field spectrum. It is suggested that the ranges of the random variations of several physical parameters may be delimited.
