The basic observed properties of pulsar radio emission are reviewed with
a view to guiding their interpretation. Particular attention is given to
the location of the sources of emission both in normal and in gamma-ray
pulsars, with brief reviews of radio propagation in the magnetosphere
and of emission mechanisms.
