The formation of the oxygen molecular cation O2(+) by radiative association of an O((sup 3)P) atom and an O(+)(sup 4) S(sup O) ion is investigated. The radiative association is due mainly to approach in the alpha(sup 2) PI(sub U) state of O2(+). Explicit calculations are carried out for association following approach in the vibrational continuum of the alpha(sup 2) PI(sub U) state with the emission of photons into bound vibrational-rotational levels of the CHI(sup 2) PI(sub g) state. The rate coefficient is obtained and found to be of the order of 5 x 10(exp -18) (cu cm)/s for temperatures above 100 K, but it drops rapidly for temperatures below 300 K due to the presence of a repulsive quadrupole interaction in the long-range molecular potential. Numerous shape resonances are manifest in the cross section at low temperatures.
