A physical coordinate system is developed to describe the damping effect of gravitational waves on observed emissions from binary stars. Because general coordinate transformations are not covariant for gravity, a filter was sought to adjust the gravity effects for coordinates close to earth, and be free from spurious nontransverse gravitational waves at infinity. An equation is presented for the orbital period change due to the presence of gravitational waves.
