We present Sloan Digital Sky Survey observations of the protostar IRAS 05436-0007 and the surrounding field near NGC 2068 that were acquired between November 1998 and February 2002. IRAS 05436-0007, the driving source for Herbig-Haro 23, significantly brightened in January 2004 (McNeil, Reipurth, & Meech (2004) IAUC 8284). The probable cause is considered to be either an FU Ori-type outburst or a dust clearing event signifying transition to a classical T Tauri star. Pre-eruption photometry of the protostar and its surroundings are presented. The extended emission is characterized as reflection nebulosity or HH-object emission on the basis of the SDSS colors.
