Kondratiev et al. (1972, 1973, 1975) have developed a method for calculating the transfer function of a system composed of a planetary surface and an atmosphere. From the spectral brightnesses of natural formations (or their constrasts) measured from a spacecraft, it is then possible to find the corresponding quantities at the level of the planetary surface. In the present paper, it is noted that the phenomenon of atmospheric refraction should be taken into consideration in the calculation of the earth's day and nighttime horizon brightness observed from space. To this end, it is necessary to take into account the dependence of the atmospheric refractive index on the height above the underlying surface. An analytical expression defining this dependence is derived.
