The performance of image-plane phase reconstruction techniques in the presence of photon noise is analyzed. Particular attention is given to the folowing methods: speckle holography, the differential speckle method, the Knox and Thompson methods, and bispectrum analysis. The three-hole experiment of Baldwin et al. (1986) is analyzed and the problem of redundant versus non-redundant beam recombination is discussed.
