The authors present MK III European VLBI Network observations of the nucleus of NGC 4151 with an angular resolution of 20 milliarcsec (1.3 pc). They have also monitored the flux density of the nucleus at a wavelength of 18 cm using the MERLIN network, and find no evidence for variability greater than 10 mJy. The structure is a 450-milliarsec collinear triple source along PA ≅ 83°. The outer components are resolved and have sizes of ≅30 and ≅60 milliarsec (2 and 4 pc). The stronger of these components is elongated in PA ≅ 57°, which is close to the PA of the arcminute-scale optical structure, but is misaligned with the arcsecond-scale radio structure. This suggests that the UV radiation responsible for ionizing the extended gas is collimated on a scale of <1 pc, whilst the final collimation of the radio jet occurs on a scale of >1 pc.
