Symbiotic binary stars contain a white dwarf that is accreting from the wind of a red giant. Typical symbiotics go into optical outburst every few years to decades, and the cause of these outburst is not known. The goal of this proposal is to search for optical outbursts in five X-ray-bright symbiotic binaries through weekly B- and V-band monitoring on the 1.3-m, queue-scheduled telescope at CTIO. This monitoring is needed to determine when these sources have met the criteria for triggering approved X-ray observations with the XMM satellite. The optical monitoring will also provide the first determination of quiescent-state, accretion-related variability in these objects and important B-V color measurements during the crucial early stages of an outburst. No outbursts have occurred during the first two years of monitoring. We are requesting long-term status to continue this CTIO monitoring program for three more semesters.
