Measurements of the general polarization of the sun, both circular polarization (CP) and linear polarization (LP), over the whole disk and over large sectors, at an absolute sensitivity level of less than about 3 x 10 to the -7th, carried out during August and September, 1986, are reported. Upper limits for the intrinsic whole-sun LP from the best data were 0.2 x 10 to the -6th in the V (yellow) band and 0.8 x 10 to the -6th in the B (blue). Definite CP was discovered. The north and south polar zones showed values of V of -1 to -6 x 10 to the -6th for the north, and 0 to +2 x 10 to the -6th for the south zones. The spectral CP rises steeply toward the blue. The whole disk had a net CP of -0.1 to -1.0 x 10 to the -6th (from red to blue), negative as with the magnetically dominant north pole. The spectral dependence of the global broadband CP resembles that of sunspots and of local nonspot regions with magnetic flux tubes.
