A summary of the theory and physics of fibre communication is presented. Consideration is given to the transmission requirements as derived from the suitable adaptation of the theory of electromagnetic propagation. The modes of optical fibre, the monomode fibre, the WKB method and cladding fields, group delay and delay equalization, and wave guide perturbations are outlined. The physical constraints and the challenges of fibre fabrication are discussed. This includes melting and drawing techniques, preparation of silica-rich fibres, absorption and scattering, refractive index characteristics, and fibre strength and fracture. Photodetection theory and system consideration are given, and application and potential are analyzed.
