The imaging capabilities of a Michelson stellar interferometer (MSI) are examined and compared with those of a Fizeau stellar interferometer (FSI). It is shown that, in order to reach a wide field-of-view, it is necessary to make the MSI optically equivalent to a FSI, loosing the specific advantages of the MSI, such as the possible rearrangement of the pupil. However, it is also shown that, for incoming monochromatic light, the only effect of pupil rearrangement is a shift of the high spatial frequency components of the object spectrum and that this shift can be easily corrected, thus yielding the same relationship by MSI as by the Fizeau interferometer. As a consequence, it is possible to obtain full imaging of the extended object with a MSI, without the constraints of a Fizeau configuration. It is emphasized that, for both MSI and FSI, it is necessary to have a good resolution in the Fourier plane.
