Various mechanisms are discussed for generating pulsed radiation near the magnetic poles of the Crab Nebula pulsar (PSR 0531+21). Practically all of it can be produced by curvature radiation. The optical and lower-frequency radiation would then be emitted by charged plasma bunches, while individual ultrarelativistic electrons would be responsible for the X rays and gamma rays. The calculated electron flux from the pulsar is comparable with that required to maintain the luminosity of the Crab Nebula at the level observed, but the electrons would have a substantially different spectrum.
